What is the future of energy? What are the technologies and paradigms that will help us deal with the decarbonization of energy systems? These will be some of the topics to be addressed with Stefano Buono, an Italian physicist and co-founder of the pioneering sustainable nuclear energy company newcleo, who will be the guest speaker on Thursday, November 28, 2024, from 6 p.m., at “Scintille” (Sparks) the series of meetings with brilliant minds and prominent personalities from a wide variety of fields organized by I3P, the Incubator of Politecnico di Torino, as part of its 25-year anniversary celebrations.
Stefano Buono, with a background as a researcher at CERN, is now at the helm of newcleo, which aims to design Advanced Modular Reactors (AMRs) of fourth generation, cooled by liquid lead and powered by reprocessed nuclear waste. With more than 537 million euros raised in private investment and more than 850 skilled employees in Europe, newcleo is building an innovative, sustainable and safe energy production model that is set to revolutionize the global energy landscape.
Buono's entrepreneurial path, however, goes far beyond the energy sector: in 2002 he founded Advanced Accelerator Applications (AAA), a radiopharmaceutical company sold to Novartis in 2018 for $3.9 billion. He is also Chairman of LIFTT, a venture capital holding company with a focus on early-stage startups in the deep-tech segment.
“The event represents a unique opportunity to explore how creativity, research and innovation are key tools toward a more sustainable future in a variety of fields, thanks to the presence of Stefano Buono, who will provide insight into the potential of nuclear energy and recent advances in applied technology,” said Giuseppe Scellato, President of I3P. “This meeting offers new perspectives to build an innovative and sustainable entrepreneurial future thanks to the contribution of a figure who has distinguished himself in his field of expertise and beyond.”
Presenting the event will be Paola Mogliotti, Director of I3P, and Adriano Marconetto, Entrepreneur In Residence at the incubator. Attendance at the meeting is free, subject to online registration while places are available.
