As the world grapples with the urgent need for climate change mitigation, the pathway to sustainable fuels, chemicals, and materials derived from renewable energy, water, and abundant resources becomes more crucial than ever. However, it's time to go beyond buzzwords and technology hype: to ensure these solutions are not only scalable but truly sustainable, current strategies and future goals must be critically assessed.
The upcoming event, held in Brussels from Wednesday 26 March to Thursday 27 March 2025, will bring together leaders from academia, industry, start-ups, and policy to address the key challenges and opportunities surrounding renewable hydrogen, fuels, and chemicals. With a focus on both scalability and sustainability, the event participants will engage in candid discussions to evaluate where society stands today and where it needs to go.
Over two dynamic days, participants will dive into specific topics, from hydrogen production to the carbon economy, with the aim of defining concrete outcomes and setting achievable milestones. Through plenary sessions, interactive formats, and a detailed road mapping exercise, participants will align on the societal needs, technological advancements, and political frameworks required to drive forward a truly sustainable solution.
Among the related European projects is H2STEEL, funded by the European Innovation Council (EIC) of the European Union, proposing an innovative solution to convert wet waste streams into green hydrogen and carbon, while recovering critical raw materials. The project is partnered by I3P and Politecnico di Torino, among many other entities from all over Europe.
Event programme
What you can expect from the event:
- gain a comprehensive overview of the current state-of-play of renewable hydrogen, fuels and chemicals technologies;
- exchange leading academics, visionary entrepreneurs, industrial leaders, policymakers, and investors;
- contribute to the development of an EU Technological Roadmap on Renewable Fuels and Chemicals;
- find partners for future collaborations and enjoy ample opportunities to network.
What EIC and SUNERGY want to achieve:
- reality check: match R&I realities with industrial needs and policy ambitions;
- gain a clear understanding of the next technological milestones;
- guide innovation at an early stage towards the most sustainable configurations that meet societal needs;
- bring together the entire innovation eco-system on renewable hydrogen, fuels and chemicals.
Topics covered:
- from a societal need to technological innovation: policy, industrialization and investors session;
- solar-to-X devices: where are we now;
- the devices of tomorrow: with biotechnology, autonomous operation and computational; materials science to fully sustainable devices;
- transition of technology to (social) innovation: techno-sustainability assessment, social challenges and opportunities and market considerations;
- standards, common metrics, fair benchmarking: key enablers for upscaling technology.
Showcasing European innovation
The conference will offer the opportunity to present your innovation, either in form of a project roll-up or by exhibiting a demonstrator (tangible, no poster). Please indicate in the registration form if you would like to show EIC and SUNERGY what you got.
Time and spaces are limited. Event organizers therefore reserve the right to select roll-up/demonstrators to ensure a wide coverage in terms of topics and presenters.
How to join the event
